Mokuhanga is the Japanese process of water-based woodblock printing. This two-session workshop focuses on the specialty printing technique known as bokashi, which is a specific approach to inking the woodblock to create subtle blends and colorful gradients. Students will learn how to use Japanese hand tools to carve their images and the basics of water-based inking and printing, with a specific focus on the bokashi technique.

This inclusive figure-drawing program welcomes participants of all skill levels to draw trans, intersex, gender-nonconforming, and nonbinary models. The sessions include gesture drawing and longer poses, with opportunities to ask for drawing feedback during the models' breaks.

Learn how to create marbled patterns in copper plate etching in this playful one-day workshop. Students will be guided through the basics of copper plate etching, including asphaltum block-out techniques for creating their own marbled designs, applying a rosin aquatint, etching, inking, and printing their plate. This experimental technique yields a wide variety of organic and abstract marks and is perfect for beginners and experienced etchers alike.

Urauchi is the Japanese process of backing paper or fabric with another layer of paper using wheat paste as an archival adhesive. This one-day workshop will cover the basics of urauchi: seaming, mounting, backing, and embedding. Students will learn about traditional materials and practice each technique at a small scale with various Japanese kozo papers.

Students will learn how to use Japanese hand tools to carve their images and the basics of water-based printing with sumi ink, with a specific focus on expressive carving and the dynamic use of negative space.

The printing session is designed for anyone who has beginner-intermediate level experience in mokuhanga woodblock printing and would like to spend more time perfecting their printing abilities. Designed as an open studio session with individualized instruction, this workshop allows students to access space, tools, materials, and technical guidance on all aspects of water-based woodblock printing.

Urauchi is the Japanese process of backing paper or fabric with another layer of paper using wheat paste as an archival adhesive. Students will learn about the materials, techniques, and tools of this traditional process as they create their own unique archival collages combining sumi ink, dyed and decorative papers, and wheat paste. Students will then learn how to back their finished collages with an additional layer of kozo paper using the urauchi process.
