About the Studio

Moonlight Press is a printmaking-based project space located in Oakland, CA specializing in copper plate etching, woodblock, archival collage, and traditional Japanese scroll mounting techniques. Moonlight Press is proud to offer a rotating selection of classes for both experienced printmakers and those new to the medium. Our small class sizes offer a high teacher-student ratio that allows for detailed, individualized instruction and focuses heavily on technique.

Nichol Markowitz

Instructor & Master Printer

Nichol Markowitz is a master printer specializing in copper plate etching, mokuhanga woodblock printing, and traditional Japanese scroll-mounting techniques. Since graduating with her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2007, she has continued to hone her craft at the professional level, executing print projects for artists including Judy Pfaff, Joyce Kozloff, Nicola Lopez, Sandow Birk, Lothar Osterberg, Emilie Clark, Max Gimblett, and Katsura Funakoshi, Swoon, and Artemio Rodriguez. For the past 8 years she has been the art director and master printer for Oakland-based artist Favianna Rodriguez. Recently, Nichol completed her graduate studies, earning a Masters in Modern and Contemporary Art History from Azusa Pacific University in the Spring of 2022. 

Courtney Sennish

Instructor & Master Printer

Courtney Sennish is a master printer specializing in copper plate etching and photogravure. She earned her BFA in printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2013 after which she apprenticed under master printer Paul Taylor at Renaissance Press to focus on the photogravure process. After moving to the Bay Area she worked as a printer and plate maker for Mullowney Printing while she completed her MFA at California College of the Arts. For the past eight years, Courtney has worked as a printer for Crown Point Press, leading and assisting all artist projects since 2015. Since gaining the title of master printer, she has led Crown Point Press projects with artists including Ed Ruscha, John Chiara, Gay Outlaw, Odili Donald Odita, Patricia Treib, Alyson Shotz, Matt Mullican and Darren Almond. Courtney’s extensive experience also includes teaching workshops, leading private and public print demonstrations and studying paper making at Awagami Factory in Japan.
