Students will be guided through the basics of copper plate etching, focusing on toner transfers.
Class participants will submit a photo (or multiple options) in advance of the class date for their etching image transfer. The image designs should be monochromatic, as shown in the example images, and may include text. This is not a perfect photo process; it is a fast and fun experimental process that will alter your images during creation.
We will start the class by transferring your photocopy image onto a copper plate to create a unique etching plate. In addition to toner transfers onto copper plates, we will also cover how to do them directly onto paper using the etching press.
During the second half of the workshop, students will concentrate on inking and printing their images by hand on our Conrad etching press. Students will leave with a finished print and etched plate. This experimental technique yields a wide variety of photo-altering results and is perfect for both beginners and experienced printmakers alike.
