Mokuhanga is the Japanese process of water-based woodblock printing. This two-session workshop focuses on the specialty printing technique known as bokashi. Roughly translated as “blur,” the bokashi technique is a specific approach to inking the woodblock that maximizes the full potential of the water-based approach to create colorful blends and subtle gradients. The first session will cover the basics of designing and carving a two-layer woodblock print using Japanese hand tools and shina plywood. The second session will focus on water-based inking and printing techniques using the bokashi technique. Students will leave with a small edition of prints of their own unique designs on kozo washi. No experience is necessary; all levels are welcome.
