Mokuhanga is the Japanese process of water-based woodblock printing. This workshop focuses on creating a one-layer black and white woodblock print inspired by the expressive style of Japanese graphic artist Shikō Munakata. In the first session, students will learn how to use Japanese hand tools to carve their image into shina plywood with a specific focus on expressive carving and the dynamic use of negative space. The second session will cover the basics of water-based inking with sumi ink and printing by hand with a Japanese baren. Students will leave with a finished edition of ten original prints of their own designs.
