Urauchi is the Japanese process of backing paper or fabric with another layer of paper using wheat paste as an archival adhesive. Traditional applications of this process include hanging scrolls, scroll paintings, frames, sliding doors, folding screens, and more. This workshop is designed as a technical overview and will cover the basics of traditional urauchi materials, techniques (seaming, mounting, backing, and embedding), and applications. Students will practice each technique at a small scale with various Japanese kozo papers. Students may also bring existing small scale works on washi paper for experimentation with this process. No experience is necessary; all levels are welcome.
