Urauchi is the Japanese process of backing paper or fabric with another layer of paper using wheat paste as an archival adhesive. This workshop will approach the traditional process of urauchi through the lens of contemporary collage. Students will learn about the materials, techniques, and tools of this traditional process as they create their own unique archival collages combining sumi ink, dyed and decorative papers, and wheat paste. Students will then learn how to back their finished collages with an additional layer of kozo paper using the urauchi process. No experience is necessary; all levels are welcome.
